Container Gardening

Container gardening is a way to save money on your home landscaping and also great for small spaces. Containers can hold a variety of plants, including flowers, herbs, and vegetables.

One of the great things about gardening in containers is the wide variety of items that you can use as containers. You can find many of the items around the house or purchase them from thrift stores. Old washtubs, and even filing cabinets laid on their sides with their drawers removed, make great containers. You can also use the filing cabinet drawers as containers. You can cut the tops off of milk cartons and use the bottom sections as planters.

In addition to converting items such as coffee cans and old shoes into fun flower and herb holders, you can use more traditional planters and containers, such as clay pots and large urns that are a little more elegant, to create an attractive landscape design.

Container gardening is not limited to the ground. Hanging baskets make excellent additions to any landscape. You can hang them from the house, the porch, and even from tree branches and along fences. Window boxes are also attractive variations on container gardening.

To ensure that your container-based landscape is a success, make sure that your plants do not need an extensive root system and that the containers are adequate for the needs of the plants.

Most flowers, even perennials, are fine in most containers. Many vegetables are fine in coffee tins and washtubs. Corn can easily grow in a filing cabinet, and most drawers are deep enough for tomatoes. Lettuce is a vegetable with a shallow root system, and peppers also work in containers. Herbs can thrive in just about any size of container, and you can grow many of them inside the house.

Use potting soil for container gardening or garden soil. These soils are rich in nutrients to provide your plants with the food they need. You can even mix in a little organic compost for added nutrition. You need to water your plants occasionally, but because the plants are enclosed in the container, you do not need to water them as often as plants in the ground.

A container garden is a great way to save time and money in your landscaping. It is also a creative way to display your plants and grow your food. And, if you have a small yard, container gardening lets you have a variety of plants for which you might not otherwise have space.
