Designing a Playroom in the Home….the children’s playroom is one of the most important rooms in any family home. The playroom is an area that children play in and have fun, with some psychologists even linking the healthy mental development of a child to exposure to such stimulating learning environments.

If you have young kids and are lucky enough to have a spare room in your home, making it into a dedicated playroom for your children would almost certainly have a positive impact during their early development stages.

With a playroom in the home, there is also the added bonus that most of your kid’s toys and learning activity products will be kept more or less in one place rather than spread around the entire house. This, of course, helps any young family to keep their home well organized and tidy.

Converting a spare room in the home into a dedicated playroom doesn’t have to cost a small fortune, with some playroom designs even being able to double up as a recreation space.

1. Location

If you have decided to create a playroom for your kids, the first thing that you need to think about is the location within the home. Ideally, a room situated next to your main activity area would be best, so that you can easily keep an eye on your kids, as well as being within constant hearing range.

2. Walls

Once you have decided on which room you are going to use, it is time to paint the walls. Acrylics are one of the best options as they are cheap, colorful and easy to clean. To the freshly painted walls, you can attach drawing boards, colorful posters with plenty of numbers, letters and animal designs to help your kids with their learning development.

3. Floors

Once the walls are finished, its time to think about the floor coverings for your new playroom. Generally it’s a good idea to avoid woollen or synthetic carpeting, as these can be difficult to clean, as well as trap dust. The best types of coverings are rubber based or foam; these are very soft, easy to clean and come in bright printed patterns specifically designed for playrooms.

4. Creating Areas

Once the floor covering is down, you can start to think about allocating certain areas of the room for different activities. You could allocate one area as an arts and craft space by merely placing tables and storage units into one corner of the room. If you don’t have a lot of space in the room, you can make certain areas multi functional with the use of plenty of storage options.

5. Storage Options

Playrooms need plenty of storage space to stow all of your kid’s toys, games and learning activity products. Clear bins with hinged tops are particularly popular, as they allow both you and your kids to see into the container to locate certain toys. You can also get storage units that double up as seats if you room is a little on the small side. Plenty of storage containers make packing away easier and helps to keep the whole room organized.

6. Furniture

There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing the right furniture for your child’s new playroom. Childcare stores will have a wide range of scaled furnishings that have rounded edges for safety, which are made of durable materials that are easy to clean and maintain.

Chairs and tables should be a priority, so that the kids have somewhere to sit for their art, crafts activities and board games. A comfortable adult size chair is also a good idea, so that you can sit in comfort whilst watching your children play.

7. Safety

Last of all, you need to give some careful thought to the overall safety of the room. Make sure all of the furniture has rounded edges and be sure that any shelving units in the room are securely fixed to the walls.

A dedicated playroom can make all of the difference to any young child, as well as making life in the home that much more organized. You can, of course, also modify the room to suit your children’s requirements, as they get older.
