Best Dog Breeds for Children

The best dog breeds for children are tolerant and patient.

The good-natured Labrador Retriever is a great dog breed for children. Labs are not generally aggressive or hyper; they are playful, easy-going, intelligent, and patient. The Lab is also a great pick if you have other animals. Labradors need to be active to reduce boredom, and they love playing in the yard or taking walks.

Golden Retrievers are similar to the Lab in personality. They are mild mannered, kind, and enjoy being around people, and they also get along with other pets. These dogs are intelligent creatures to train. Playing fetch is a favorite game for them. Because of their playful nature, this breed of dog would be great for an older child who enjoys the outdoors.

Even though Beagles have a baying bark, they are not aggressive dogs and have a friendly demeanor. Their tails seem to be in an unending wagging motion. Because friendliness comes naturally for them, they do not like being left alone. They become bored when left by themselves for too long. Their size makes them great picks for smaller children.

Basset Hounds are generally docile, yet they’re known for their stubbornness. They are also known for their gentleness, are sweet by nature, and enjoy attention. They’re a great dog breed for children of all ages.

German Shepherds are probably best for older children who enjoy playing outdoors. Because of the dogs’ size and strength, they are probably not suitable for younger children. German Shepherds are known for their loyalty, are protective by nature, and are quite tolerant.

The black and white spotted Dalmatian is associated with fire trucks. But for a family, a Dalmatian can be a trusted friend. They are outgoing dogs with lots of energy who need human companionship.

American Cocker Spaniels are sensitive and sweet dogs. They are generally obedient to their master, enjoy the attention of children, and are definitely a people-friendly dog.

Bearded Collies are known for their bounce. These dogs are playful and happy, like to be around people, and do not hide their excitement of being around you. Female Collies tend to be calmer, while males are more rambunctious.

Cockapoos are not only a good dog breed for children, but they also get along with other pets. They do not need a lot of space. Apartment life is OK with them.

In choosing the right dog for your family, always remember each dog is an individual. While certain breeds are more friendly to children, each individual dog has its own temperament.
