If you have a workshop, laundry room or storage area in your garage, maintaining a suitable temperature is important. In addition, the temperature of an attached garage influences the heating and cooling efficiency inside the home.
Consider your garage door insulation project as a way to save money on energy costs, protect personal belongings and provide a comfortable working environment.
Insulating your garage may be easier than you think. There are three main types of insulation made specifically for garage doors. Inexpensive rigid foam may be difficult to manage if your garage doors have oversize panels.Reflective foil insulation, sold in rolls, installs quickly. Vinyl backed fiberglass insulation panels make measuring and installation a breeze. The type you choose depends on your budget and confidence installing the product.
Rigid Foam Rigid foam insulation kits for garage doors are readily available at hardware stores, home centers and through online sources. Handy homeowners might try purchasing sheets of rigid foam and tackling the project themselves, however, garage door insulation kits provide all the necessary supplies you will need for the job.
Most modern garage doors have panels with metal frames that will easily hold rigid foam insulation sections up to 11/2-inches thick. Lightweight rigid foam insulation should not hamper the operation of your garage door. When comparing products, remember that a higher R-value indicates better insulation and thermal resistance.
To install: measure the width and height inside the rails of each garage door panel. Keep track of the dimensions of each panel, as each one may be slightly different. Score the foam sheet based on your measurements.
