Home Décor Tricks
For Smaller Rooms

by Sacha
(Houston, Texas, USA)

Small rooms often present special problems when we set out to decorate them. Standard size furniture often looks out of proportion in a small room!.

Diminutive rooms may not have much window space and therefore be short of natural light. Walls that are painted in dark colors or covered with wallpapers with large patterns make any room seem smaller than it actually is.

Small spaces can appear overcrowded when too much clutter fills the space. Small rooms do indeed appear to be a décor problem. However, following a few simple guidelines can make decorating a smaller space an easy task.

Before any other decorating task is undertaken, clean out items cluttering the room! Remove items you don’t use, remove junk and get rid of it. You may be surprised at the improvement this one simple step affords.

There is another type of clutter that needs to be addressed in order to make a small room appear larger; that of eye clutter. Eye clutter covers a wide range; it can be large patterns on wallpaper, large pictures on the walls, large furniture and overwhelming colors on the walls. In order for a small room to appear larger color and space need to complement each other.

Minimize the amount of furniture in your small room, use furniture with legs rather than solid pieces for a more spacious feel to the room. If at all possible use horizontal furniture rather than vertical to make the room appear lengthier. Instead of hanging large pictures on the walls use smaller pictures hung as a group.

Large patterns on upholstery and wallpaper overwhelm small rooms and make them appear smaller than they really are. Use tiny or small patterns and stick with only one, at most two patterns to minimize eye clutter.

Color is extremely important to the décor of any room. The color of a small room will be one of the most obvious features of the room; by choosing color carefully you will be able to make the room appear to be more sizeable.

In a small room the trick is to select a pale “receding” color such as lilac, blue, green or a neutral tone of off white. Audacious colors such as orange and red have the effect of shrinking space so should be avoided.

Mirrors are a great decorating tool. Mirrors allow light to reflect and dance around a room, making it appear lighter and more open, thus larger.

Once you have done the hard work such as the de-cluttering and painting you are ready to finish the room. Select appropriate furniture and place it to its best advantage. If you choose to hang pictures, keep in mind the guidelines above. And remember, a nice mirror will do a lot to enhance the space.

Rugs to complement the colors of the room are a fine touch to add to wood flooring or tile flooring.

Following the tips above, select an area rug with a small complementary pattern or a solid rug that goes well with the colors of the room.

Just because a room is small does not mean it cannot be stylish and comfortable!.
