How to Clean Your Home Gutters

by Gail Browser
(Fort Worth, Texas, USA)

Home cleaning is not just important for indoors & should also be regularly done outside the house. That means checking the lawn and also climbing up the roof because debris is also present in the gutters.

When you clean your gutter, make sure you have a steady ladder so you don't have a hard time going up and down the roof. This must not be placed against the downspout or gutter because this is made of lightweight material and could easily bend or break.

Once you are on top of the roof, inspect the gutter. If there are leaves or twigs, remove these by hand, using a large spoon, gutter scoop or a garden trowel.

All of the debris should be placed in a bucket or trash bag so you won't have a hard time disposing it after. To protect your hands and nails from dirt or injury, you should wear thick and sturdy gloves.

Aside from twigs and leaves, you may also encounter caked on dirt and since this is difficult to remove once it hardens, you better wet it first and then use the gutter scoop or trowel to take it out.

Some leaves or twigs may have gone entered your downspouts. One way to prevent debris from clogging your gutter again will be to cover it with a strainer similar to what you might use in the kitchen.

Since this breaks due to wear and tear, inspect it regularly and replace it with a new one.

Since you can't take them out by hand, you will have to use water. If water flows well, then you have nothing to worry about because it is clean.

Should there be a problem and it appears to be clogged, you can take care of it using a small plumber's snake or an unbent clothes hanger. Just be careful when you do it because you could damage the downspout.

House cleaning outside is just challenging as it is inside but this is manageable as long as you have the proper tools and you know what you are doing. You just have to get your hands dirty to get the job done because this is much better than calling someone to do it and paying that person when you could have accomplished this task on your own.

Of course, if you are too old and you have kids, instruct them to do it because this is one of things they have to learn how to do when it comes to house cleaning.
