Space is at a premium these days and for many of us, no matter whether you rent or own a property, you might find yourself having to cram an awful lot of belongings in to small bedroom!

Most new builds or conversions have very little or no storage space, which makes planning and furnishing your room all the more important. You need to maximise the space available, here are some useful tips.

Plan:

Don’t simply wander in to a furniture store and start buying things you like or think you need. Firstly measure the dimensions of your room as you need to make the best use of every inch of space. Draw a plan of your room to scale and think about different ways to use the space, where to position the bed and how can you use the wall space for storage?

Have a clear plan drawn to scale and a list of all the furniture and fittings you need. If this all sounds like too much hard work, why not try a bespoke bedroom specialist, they will measure up and help you select and install everything you need.

Shopping:

Once you have your plan, start your research online and try to find the best options to meet your room plan. Remember, you need to maximise space so don’t get carried away. If you have difficult dimensions you may need to try a more bespoke approach. You will find some great options for cheap fitted wardrobes on the market and you’d be surprised how far your money can stretch. If you have a really small space, going bespoke may be the best option as it can be hard to fit in all the standard sized furniture you might need.

Style:

It may sound obvious, but have a clear view of the sort of style and decor you would like to adopt. As a general rule for small spaces, avoid design schemes that are too dark as it will make the room feel dingy and uninviting. Use light airy schemes, to make the space appealing and not overcrowded. Mirrors reflect the light and make a room feel bigger so try and include a large one if you can.

Costs:

Whatever your budget, plan it carefully; there are always some bargains to be had, but keep your plan in mind and stick to it. Think about your space and how best to add inexpensive but practical solutions, for example, chunky white wall shelves can be bought cheaply and they are a great way to provide a contemporary additional storage solution. If you go to a bespoke bedroom specialist, make sure you get a full schedule of work and costs before you commit fully to the installation.

So, create a detailed plan and stick to it, define your style and your budget and you shouldn’t go far wrong!
