How to Prevent Water Damage in the Kitchen – Part 1

file00078736304There are many areas in your kitchen, which can get affected by water. In order to prevent water damage in the kitchen you must follow certain steps.

If you want to prevent water damage in the kitchen, look for the warning signs of excessive moisture. People often neglect the kitchen and feel that since it is cleaned regularly, there cannot be any water damage. If you regularly inspect the moisture sources that are mentioned below, your kitchen will remain in a good condition and damages will be prevented.


The area that is behind the refrigerator is hard to reach and so it is often ever inspected. However, inspecting this area will reduce lots of water problems. Whenever you see water behind the refrigerator, don’t ignore it and either fix it yourself or call a technician to fix the job. Sometimes, you may notice mold growth in that area.

You must immediately clean it and apply an anti-mold solution so that it prevents from increasing further. If you own an icemaker, it is important that you check the hose whether it is sealed or not and whether it is attached properly to the water supply.

Sink and Countertop

One of the most frequently used areas of a kitchen is the sink and the countertop. Water is used liberally over here. You must check beneath the sink and in case there are water leaks, remove the stored items like trashcans and check for the leak. If you notice a leakage under the sink, it means that there are drain problems, and you must take an action to immediately repair it.

Also, check around the sink. There may a faulty faucet or a blocked drain. Both these problems can be fixed easily. Next is the countertop, which needs your constant attention. if you see that tiles are chipped, cracked or missing, fix them immediately. This is because cracks in the countertop may lead to water seepage especially when you are cleaning it. Fixing the same would prevent water from permeating.

If you see that the walls around the sink or pipes are stained, it means there is an internal seepage. This should be fixed immediately as internal water damage may cause fractures in the wall.


Usually dishwashers are safe equipment that doesn’t break easily. However, if you have noticed lately that your dishwasher doesn’t empty after using it, it is time to check the filter that may be blocked. Apart from that, check beneath the dishwasher for any leaks. If there are leaks, it is possible that there are unsealed joints a damaged hose. Check these and fix them immediately. You should consider installing steel braided hoses on your dishwasher.
