Choosing a Landscape Maintenance Service

Here are some tips to help you choose the right landscape maintenance service for your home landscape.

  • Know what you need for your landscape. You may not need a landscape service that does everything. Do you simply want someone to mow the lawn and fertilize it occasionally? Or do you want a perfect yard with topiary shrubs and weed-free flowerbeds?
  • Seek out a reputable company with reliable references and a satisfied customer base. If you see a company taking care of a neighbor’s landscape, ask your neighbor about the company's service.
  • Look at the equipment that the landscape maintenance service uses. Does it appear to be in good shape? A company that takes good care of its equipment is more likely to take good care of your yard. Also, make sure it's the right equipment for the job. Even if you are not doing the yard work yourself, have at least a basic understanding of what your yard needs.
  • Find a company that cares about customer service and takes pride in its work. Find out the company’s policy on redoing work that does not meet your satisfaction. Make sure that your landscaping maintenance service is willing to fix mistakes. If the company says it specializes in lawn care (creating a greener, lusher, healthier lawn) and offers fertilization services, choose a company that offers a guarantee. You do not want a company’s mistake to leave you paying the bill for a dead lawn that needs to be replaced.

Shop around and compare the work done by various companies. Get price quotes in writing. Then hire the best company that fits your needs and budget.
