Money Saving Landscaping Tips

Here are a few helpful money saving landscaping tips. Start by planning your landscape. By having a landscape plan, you will buy only what you actually need.

Make your purchases in phases.

By planning your landscaping in phases, you can buy what you need as you go along and as you have the money, which saves interest on home improvement loans or credit card purchases.

Cheaper is not always better.

If you can get the same quality item for less, usually go for it. However, do not sacrifice quality to save a few dollars; buying a diseased plant only means buying another one after the first one dies. Also, you may find that spending a few dollars more at local shops with true experts who can answer your questions is worth the extra money.

Time your landscape purchases.

Plan your landscaping ahead of time and watch for bargains. For example, you could buy lumber during the winter, when it costs less, and then store it until you are ready to use it. Also, watch for plant sales at local nurseries.

Buy from alternative resources.

You can order through catalogs or online, which may cost less than your local store. An inexpensive membership to a garden and seed club can provide good prices on many items, along with helpful advice. Another landscaping tip is to arrange a plant exchange in your neighborhood. Also, many cities offer low price or free mulch and compost, and you can get stones and bricks at many construction or demolition sites (with permission, of course).

Share costs with neighbors.

If you pool resources with your neighbors, you can often get a good deal on items bought in bulk. Likewise, share the rental fees for machinery such as chippers, tillers, and aerators. If everyone contributes a few dollars, you can work out a schedule where each neighbor gets to use the equipment while it is rented.
