Remodeling on a Budget!
by Alana Day

In today's economic climate, buying a new home may not be an option. It is difficult to sell the home you are currently living in and hard to qualify for a mortgage loan. What many people have decided to do is remodel the home they currently live in to make the house more livable and modern.
Remodeling on a budget may seem like a daunting task. However, it can be done. Whether you need to add a room or install new appliances, there are many ways to approach a remodeling project without breaking the bank.
When upgrading a specific room such as a bathroom or the kitchen, make sure you check out many different sources for appliances and fixtures. Many stores offer brand new items such as appliances that might be last year's model or they may have a "ding" or two in them.
When it comes to major projects in your home check out several contractors and get references. Jobs such as adding a room or screening in a porch should probably be done by professionals who specialize in these improvements. Still, because jobs are hard to come by in this day and age, even professional contractors will be willing to bargain with you.
Again, make sure you check out several contracting companies and compare the prices and references. When it comes to work such as painting, wallpapering, adding shelves and installing appliances, you can often rely on your own abilities and/or those of a friend who might pitch in and help. Recruit your kid sand their buddies to help and offer pizza and sodas as a reward after the job is done.
Another budget cutting remodeling project is landscape design. Stay away from elaborate and decorative gardens that will require a lot of upkeep. Instead, go for the new xeriscape look by using ground cover that will basically take care of itself.
If you are doing the remodeling yourself, rent tools rather than buy them. Most cities have two or three rental stores where you can get everything you need to complete a project without having to spend a fortune in the process Everything from staple guns to garden tillers can be rented and are an inexpensive alternative to having to buy equipment.
For the most part, remodeling can be a fun way to update your current home and save a lot of money in the process Even a small change will increase the value of your home down the road and help you to enjoy your living space more now. Make a list of projects you want done and think creatively as to how you can complete them on a budget. Saving money will be a great incentive to get the work done and will make you appreciate your home a lot more in the long run.
