Small Yard Landscaping Tips

The key to small yard landscaping is to plan well and choose plants and designs that complement the small space.

When you have a small yard, you can build up rather than building out. For example, build raised beds for your plants. Some beds, if built on planks of wood, can be designed with wheels. Then you have a landscape that you can move wherever you want.

Another way to maximize small landscape space is container gardening. Plants in containers take up less space and give you a moveable landscape. You can place the containers for decorative effect when you entertain or move them out of the way for a family game of flag football.

Choosing colors for your landscape is also important. If you want your yard to feel and look larger, select cool colors (such as blue). Choose plants that are both decorative and help your yard look bigger, such as silver king, evergreens, blue spruce, and Alberta pines.

Another attractive feature for small yard landscaping is a small, well-designed rock garden. You can place it in a little nook or corner of the property, or even up against the house on a raised bed. Choose your rocks carefully to complement each other, and choose plants that go with the rocks and that will not spread too much. Hens and chicks are great plants for use in a small rock garden.

Landscaping a small yard can also include a small water feature. You can purchase small water features similar to serenity fountains for outdoor use. Even a small birdbath can add a feeling of elegance when landscaping a small yard. Water features come in a variety of types and designs, and you can likely find one to fit the size and the look of your yard.

By carefully considering your design, using small features and cool colors, and thinking about what would help give your yard a touch of elegance, you can have a nicely landscaped small yard for your home.
