Tips for Installing Practical Shelving Solutions

by Harvey Bond
(Chicago, USA)

One of the major annoyances of life seems to be lack of storage space. No matter how much space we have in our homes and apartments, it seems there is never enough room for all the items accumulated in our lives. Whether the items to be stored are holiday decorations, off season clothes or all that exercise equipment we"re going to use one day, finding space for it can be a real problem.

One of the best ways to deal with this common problem is to install new shelving. The right shelving solutions can take space that would otherwise be underutilized or unused and transform it into a storage oasis. Before you run out and install that shelving, however, it is important to plan the project, and to determine what type of shelving works best for your home or apartment.

Planning is of course an important consideration, as is having an idea of what type of items will be stored on those great new shelves. It is important to have some sort of idea of the size of the items to be stored, as this will help you choose the right types of shelves.

It is also important to carefully measure the area in which the new shelves are to be installed. Having the measurements ahead of time will save you lots of time and hassle, and help to avoid the problem of buying shelving that is either too big or too small for the room.

It is also important to consider the location in which the new shelving is to be installed. If the location is the basement, garage or other utilitarian space, you can probably get away with similarly utilitarian shelving. Metal shelving can offer a practical and low cost, if not particularly attractive, storage solution for garages and basements
