file9221246822250We have all created New Year’s resolutions at one time or another however the fact is not many of us ever keep to them. For sure they sound a great idea at the time and as the year draws to a close we make up fanciful things that we are going to try and do.

This usually comes in the form of giving something up or taking on something new. So, for example, many people decide to give up smoking for the year ahead or they might decide to learn a new language. However, just a few weeks or even days into the New Year and they will have probably just bought a packet of cigarettes and ditched the language book.

So, what makes us want to give up so easily? Even though the things that we say we are going to do are probably for the better or will enrich our lives what is it that means that we cannot stick to them?

January in itself is a very grim month for most of us. We are still trying to get over the financial cost of Christmas and, generally, there is usually not that much to look forward too with the bad weather and the fact that we are trying to stick to our resolutions. Indeed, most New Year resolutions fail because they are not well defined or specific enough.

Giving up smoking is one example. Do you just plan to quit right away? Or are you going to wean yourself off and set yourself a target of, say, the end of January or February to have quit completely? Having vague notions of doing something worthwhile for a New Year’s resolution is all well and good however the fact is that unless you have a actual plan in place then it just is not going to work very well.

Self-belief is another big problem for many people and sticking to their New Year’s resolutions. You may be filled with enthusiasm at the start however if you do not believe in yourself to stick to the plan then it is guaranteed to fail eventually.

Basically New Year’s resolutions are something that a lot of people come up with but very few ever achieve. Having a clear plan in place to fulfill your resolution as well as having the self-belief to follow it through will give you a much better chance of success in the long run!.
